Hi, I’m Krista Shirley—founder of The Yoga Shala and one of a handful of Level Two Authorized Ashtanga teachers in the United States.
I created this guide to help people like you understand that yoga doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Mysore-style Ashtanga Yoga changed my life, and I’ve dedicated the last two decades to making it accessible, empowering, and rooted in compassion for every body and every story.

Absolutely not! Mysore is designed for all levels—from complete beginners to advanced students. You’ll learn at your own pace, with one-on-one support from the teacher, so no prior yoga experience is required.
In a typical class, everyone moves together through the same sequence. In Mysore, you receive personalized instruction and progress at your own speed. It’s quiet, focused, and uniquely tailored to your needs and abilities.
You’ll be welcomed warmly and guided step-by-step. You won’t need to know anything ahead of time—we’ll show you where to start, and your teacher will support you throughout your practice.
